Monarch is a good budgeting app, so the reason to look past it is usually not that it is bad. It is that your money has outgrown a budgeting app: accounts in two countries, holdings on exchanges Monarch does not read, a fund commitment, a currency it cannot convert. Here are six alternatives, including two that are budgeting apps and four that are not, with the facts and a plain line on fit.
Before the list, the two reasons people most often give for leaving Monarch, from its own help centre: it supports US dollars and Canadian dollars only and performs no currency conversion, so a ¥1,000 transaction shows as $1,000; and it prices only US-listed securities, with no historical performance for non-public holdings. If neither affects you, Monarch may still be the right app and the question is only price.
Matrix of six Monarch alternatives against seven criteria
Six alternatives, honestly
Kubera
$250 a year; 14-day free trial
A net-worth tracker rather than a budgeting app: every asset and debt, connected at 20,000+ institutions in 40+ countries, any currency, crypto exchanges and wallets, private investments with capital-call schedules, documents, a daily history and a read-only connection to ChatGPT or Claude.
Pick it ifYou left Monarch because of currencies, countries, crypto or private investments, and you want the whole balance sheet, not the month.
Not ifYou want a budget. Kubera has none and will not add one.
Copilot Money
$95 a year or $13 a month; one-month trial
A fast, well-designed budgeting app for iPhone, iPad, Mac and web, with investment and crypto views. US institutions and US dollars only; no Android app.
Pick it ifYou want a budgeting app with a nicer design than Monarch and you live on Apple devices in the US.
Not ifYou use Android or have any account outside the US.
Empower Personal Dashboard
Free
The old Personal Capital: a free net-worth and investment dashboard for US institutions, paid for by Empower’s wealth-management service (0.89% of assets a year up to $1M). Expect an adviser call.
Pick it ifYou want a free overview of US accounts and do not mind the sales funnel.
Not ifYou have money outside the US, hold crypto on exchanges, or dislike being called.
PocketSmith
From $9.99 a month billed annually; free plan is manual import only
A budgeting and forecasting app with bank feeds in the US, Canada, UK, Europe, Australia and New Zealand, which converts every account into one base currency.
Pick it ifYou want a budgeting app that handles more than one currency and country.
Not ifYou want depth on investments; it is budgeting-first, and a single account cannot hold mixed currencies.
YNAB
$109 a year
The envelope-budgeting app. Strong on method, light on net worth and investments; YNAB recommends a separate budget for each currency.
Pick it ifYou want a budgeting discipline more than a dashboard.
Not ifYou want investments, crypto or more than one currency in one place.
A spreadsheet, with or without Tiller
Free; Tiller $99 a year for US bank feeds
Google Sheets or Excel, with GOOGLEFINANCE for share prices and FX and Tiller for daily US balances. Entirely yours; entirely maintained by you.
Pick it ifYou want your own model and have few enough accounts to keep it current.
Not ifYou have more than a handful of institutions, non-US accounts, crypto wallets or private holdings.

Bar chart of annual prices: Empower free, Copilot $95, Monarch $99.99, YNAB $109, PocketSmith about $120, Monarch Plus $199, Kubera $250
If the reason is price
Monarch Core is $99.99 a year and Plus is $199. Copilot is $95, YNAB $109, PocketSmith from about $120, Empower free, a spreadsheet free. Kubera is $250. If you are leaving over price alone and your needs fit a budgeting app, Copilot or PocketSmith is the straight swap. Kubera costs more because it does a different job; it is only the cheaper choice when it replaces a budgeting app plus a portfolio tracker plus a crypto tracker plus the sheet.
If the reason is the rest of your money
The common thread in Kubera’s reviews from former Monarch users is that budgeting apps do the month well and the balance sheet badly: investments are a list of balances, anything non-US is wrong or missing, crypto is one exchange, private holdings are a number you typed. Kubera starts from the balance sheet. If that is the gap you hit, it is the alternative built for it, and you can keep a budgeting app alongside for the month.
Former Monarch users on why they moved
“I have previously tried products such as Monarch, but while they do better on budgeting, they're terrible at investments.”
“As a former Mint user, I tried Monarch and several other options, but found most were geared toward budgeting, cluttered with ads, or plagued by unreliable connections.”
“Budgeting apps are great for managing day to day behavior, but they rarely capture the bigger picture. Kubera fills that gap by focusing purely on net worth, asset allocation, and long term tracking.”
What is the best free alternative to Monarch Money?
Empower Personal Dashboard is free for US accounts; the cost is adviser outreach. A spreadsheet is free and unlimited but maintained by hand.
Which Monarch alternative supports multiple currencies?
Kubera holds any asset in any currency and converts to your base currency. PocketSmith converts bank accounts to one base currency. Copilot, Empower and YNAB are single-currency.
Is Kubera a budgeting app?
No. Kubera tracks assets and liabilities, not spending. It is an alternative to Monarch’s net-worth and investment side, not its budget.
Which alternative is best for investments and crypto?
Kubera: broker holdings with cost basis and IRR, 20+ crypto exchanges, 18 chains and DeFi, private investments with schedules, all on one balance sheet.
I've used tons of net worth tracking apps. Kubera is my favorite by FAR. I have zero affiliation. I'm pretty sure it's a tiny team. But they've been launching so many cool features and are moving fast.
Kubera has proved to be the best product we’ve found for expats — both those moving to the United States and Americans moving abroad — to manage their global investments and track them in the currency of their choice.
